Ruby Recommends | Non-stop Nail Care

We take huge pride in our hair, have a million and one products in our skincare regimes, and are constantly on the look out for the hottest, newest makeup trend - but what often gets forgotten is nail care. Your nails deserve as much care and attention as the rest of your beauty routine! As we age, our nail growth can start to slow and our collagen levels naturally reduce, which can all lead to nails becoming more brittle, prone to breakage and discoloured. The key to combatting this and having strong, healthy nails is regular grooming and care - there’s something undeniably elegant about a well-maintained manicure, all year round.

Must-have tools

Ruby Hammer with Ruby & Millie Nail File from 90s

It’s been over twenty five years since I launched the first glass nail files in the UK with Ruby & Millie, and they truly are a game-changer.

"Millie Kendall and I launched the first glass files in the UK as Ruby & Millie... and we still regularly receive messages to say they are still going strong over twenty years later." - Ruby Hammer

Nail File

My Nail Files offers gentle abrasion that prevents tearing and splitting while shaping, and they’re durable, hygienic, and sustainable — lasting for years. They can be sanitised and reused again and again with over 10,000 hours of filing time you will never need another file… unless of course you drop it.

“I’ve loved glass files from the very first time I used them. I started with a Ruby & Millie one about twenty years ago and since then I’ve never used anything else to shape and file my nails.” - Helen, Operations

Nail Kit

My Nail Kit is perfect for on the go nail care, containing a mini nail file and cuticle pusher. Compact enough to fit in the smallest of bags, it ensures your nails are looking healthy, elegant, and professionally maintained wherever you may be.

At-Home Manicure

Heading to the salon for a manicure every few weeks can soon add up and become costly, so here are my tips for the perfect at-home manicure:

  • Start Fresh: Remove any old polish and ensure nails are clean and dry. If you have acrylics, gel, BIAB, etc.. ensure this is removed professionally to avoid damaging your real nail beneath.
  • Shape Up: Trim nails to your desired length, then file with a glass file for smooth finish.
  • Tidy up: Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back cuticles, and a buffer to buff away any ridges leaving a natural shine and smooth surface for polish.
  • Colour and Care: If you prefer naturally manicured nails, stop here! But if you prefer to finish with polish, apply a base coat, your chosen colour, and a top coat — remember, thin layers last longer. Finish with cuticle oil and hand cream to replicate a salon finish!

Hydration is Key
Just like your skin, nails suffer from cold weather and harsh chemicals (make sure to always wear gloves when cleaning or using strong products!). Regularly apply a nourishing cuticle oil and massage it in to promote healthy growth and hydration. Keep a mini bottle on hand for easy reapplication throughout the day, along with a rich, high-quality hand cream to keep both your nails and skin from drying out/cracking. I recommend SolarOil, and Khiel’s hand cream.

Supplements & Diet
To support healthy, strong nails, consider adding a collagen supplement, such as Absolute Collagen, to your daily routine. Pair this with a nutrient-rich diet full of vitamins and minerals, to give your nails the best chance for growth.
