RUBY RECOMMENDS | SIMPLIFYING SKINCARE

In a world of TikTok tutorials, demonstrating endless skincare routines, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to take care of your skin. However, achieving a healthy, natural glow doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes simple is better, ensuring your skin gets exactly what it needs - no more, no less. It’s important to assess our skin before we start applying product, as it’s needs can vary day to day. Does it feel more dry than normal? Am I slightly more oily today than I was yesterday? There will be some days our skin needs a full routine, and others that a splash of water and a light moisturiser will do the trick.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Before heading to the shops to buy a list of products you’ve seen recommended online, it’s important to understand your own skin type. This helps choose products that suit your individual needs. Which skin type best describes your skin?

Normal | Feels balanced - not too oily, bot too dry.

Oily | Prone to shine, and feeling greasy - especially in the t-zone.

Dry | Can appear dull, and become flaky or rough.

Combination | Oily in some areas (usually the t-zone) and dry in others.

Sensitive | Sensitive skin can apply alongside any of the above skin types, meaning your skin is more reactive to external factors.

Essential Steps

Cleansing

Cleansing is exactly that - cleaning your face. A good cleanse removes dirt, makeup, and excess oil that build up throughout the day or may be leftover from the night before. I always start by washing my hands, and then rubbing the cleanser in the palm of my hands to warm it up. Starting from the bottom of my neck, I work my up and around my face in circular motions, focusing on problem areas such as nose, chine and forehead. I then use a hot flannel to remove the cleanser and dirt.

Foaming cleansers tend to be great for oily skin, whereas cream cleansers are good for dry skin. If your skin is more sensitive, look for gentle, fragrance-free options.

Moisturising

Cleansing, whilst good for the skin, can deplete your it of some of it’s natural moisture, so it’s important we replace that. Moisturising is essential for keeping your skin hydrated, and also creates a protective barrier. Even oily skin needs moisture! The trick is choosing the right formulation:

  • Oily Skin: Opt for lightweight, gentle moisturisers.
  • Dry Skin: Rich, creamy formulas (also great for winter months when you need added protection from the elements!)
  • Sensitive Skin: Fragrance-free, with hypoallergenic ingredients.

Sun Protection

If there’s one stage you should never skip, it’s SPF. UV rays are present whether its beautiful blue skies, or grey and cloudy, so it’s crucial to find a good SPF to wear all year round.

According to dermatologists, there are multiple benefits to everyday SPF use, including prevention of skin cancer, reduction of skin discolouration and dark spots, and slowing down the skin ageing process. They also help to prevent wrinkles and fine lines by protecting the collagen and elastin in the skin. So whether I’m on the beach, sat by the window, or going for a walk, my SPF is a must for every day.

Additional Steps

Exfoliation

Exfoliation buffs away old skin cells, leaving a smoother, brighter complexion. Exfoliating too often, though, can lead to irritation especially for sensitive skin. Stick to exfoliating 1-2 times a week, or as and when needed.

Toning

Toner is refreshing, revitalising and can help replace moisture in the skin. It’s not a step you would necessarily need to use daily, but as when needed.

Treatments

For the times your skin really needs an extra boost, treat yourself to an at-home face mask or head to a salon for a more specialised treatment.

Ruby's Top Tips

  • Check expiration dates and remove any products you haven’t used in months.
  • Use products that serve multiple purposes, like a moisturiser with SPF.
  • Your skin’s needs change with the season, age, and lifestyle. Be adaptable and adjust your routine accordingly.
  • A few high-quality products suited to your skin type are be more effective than a large collection of products that don’t work for you.

By understanding your personal skin needs, and focusing on the essentials, you can achieve a healthy, radiant complexion without the fuss. Consistency is key, and a simpler routine will always be easier to stick to in the long run. Allow your skin to shine through, and remember… all skin is in

So many times I have replaced my old mascara, after reading a review that this one will last all day, doesn’t smudge etc whether cheap or expensive, branded or not I’d give them a try, then left disappointed!
So, reading these reviews, I thought, is this another of those?? I ordered it!
It arrived promptly, its tiny wand looks insignificant until you use it, it’s amazing, it coats all the lashes, doesn’t move, lasts and won’t leave you with those end of the day eyes…. FANTASTIC mascara and well written review!
