RUBY RECOMMENDS | BOLD LIP, BIG CONFIDENCE
There are so many ways to wear a red lip… from the full classic pout to a ‘bitten-lip’ stain, there is something for everyone. A red lip is the little black dress of make up, find the one that fits you and it’s good for every occasion.
Lip Prep
The key to a power lip is all in the prep. Similar to your skin, for long-lasting lip product you want a nice, smooth base to apply on top of. Make sure your lips are hydrated, as lipstick (especially matte) will cling on to any cracks, drying them out further. You can use a lip scrub or an old toothbrush to work away dry skin, and ensure you regularly apply lip balm.
Make sure to blot away any excess lip balm / moisturiser with a single ply of tissue or blotting paper before applying your lipstick, otherwise the product will just slide.
Application
Make sure to apply your lip stick in even layers; you don't want it to wear off in patches. Apply one layer, and then blot away any excess using a layer of tissue. Add more colour and blot again, finishing with a final layer of colour. The trick is to build lots of thin, even layers, instead of one thick, gloopy one.
Subtle, buildable colour
Some people feel a bold lip can be overpowering, but you don’t have to jump straight in to the deep end. Our Lip Serum Balms are a great way to start subtle and build up colour. Start with a light swipe, test the colour, see how you feel in it, and if you're a fan... be brave and layer up for a brighter pop of colour.
Full pout-mode
If you want to opt for a full red pout, start by applying lipliner. This prevents your lipstick from feathering, which can be even more noticeable when using a bright shade such as red.
Some people apply lipstick colour directly from the bullet, whereas others feel they get more control with a lip brush. When using a lip brush, start by using the flat side of your brush to draw a straight line along the centre of your bottom lip line. Moving on to the top lip, line the cupid's bow one side at a time, then working the brush in towards the middle of the lip. Pay attention to the inner corners of the mouth by making an 'o shape' with your lips to ensure full, even coverage.
I often go back over the edges with my lip liner once I’ve applied lip colour, and always follow up by using my ring finger to blur the edges and soften the look. It is a simple trick but gives a beautiful finish.
Touch-ups
Remember, no matter how good your prep/application is, your lips are constantly on the move, so unless you intend to sit perfectly still without drinking, eating or talking all night, you will have to keep an eye on your lipstick and likely touch it up once or twice. Keep your lip products in your handbag, along with a couple of sheets of blotting paper, so they can be easily reached throughout the evening.
Makeup should be fun, and used as a way to express yourself and boost confidence. Allow yourself to experiment, play around with new colours… and ditch the fear when it comes to trying something bold!
