RUBY REVEALS | Simple Tricks for Heat-Proof Makeup
Here are the tricks I rely on to keep makeup looking fresh, natural and long-lasting throughout the summer months.
MAKE YOUR SPF DOUBLE DUTY
I'm always looking for products that work harder. A great SPF that also primes the skin helps simplify your routine while creating the perfect canvas for makeup. My favourites are No7 and Allies of Skin that protect while leaving skin smooth and ready for makeup application.
LEAN INTO CREAM FORMULAS
As temperatures rise, powders can sometimes cling to the skin or look a little cakey as the day goes on. Cream blushers, bronzers and highlighters melt more naturally into the complexion, giving skin that healthy, fresh finish that summer calls for. Our Cheek Colours were designed with exactly this in mind. Shades like Bronze and Peach bring warmth and life to the complexion whilst still allowing your skin to look like skin.
LOCK IN WITH LAYERS
One of the biggest mistakes I see is applying too much product in one go. Less really is more. Build your makeup in light, micro-fine layers and, where needed, set with a finely milled powder such as By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder with a Face Brush. The result is makeup that lasts longer and looks more natural.
SWITCH TO A TUBING MASCARA
If mascara smudges are your summer nemesis, it's time to try a tubing formula. Tubing mascaras wrap each lash in lightweight tubes that resist heat, humidity and sweat. My go-to is the Mascara & Brow Duo which delivers definition and staying power on both the eyes and brows without flaking or transferring.
BLOT BEFORE YOU POWDER
If your skin starts looking shiny, resist the urge to keep adding powder. Instead, blot away excess oil first. Blotting papers work brilliantly, but if you don't have any to hand, a single ply of tissue does the job just as well. Then, if needed, apply a very light dusting of powder.
KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR FACE
It sounds simple, but touching your face throughout the day transfers oil, sweat and bacteria onto the skin, which can affect both your makeup and your complexion. Using makeup brushes such as our Magnetic Brush Sets rather than fingers wherever possible can also help keep application more hygienic. Great for on-the-go touch-ups for those long days.
DITCH FULL-COVERAGE FOUNDATION
In summer, I prefer to let real skin show through. Rather than applying foundation all over, focus coverage only where you need it, around redness, pigmentation or blemishes. The result is fresher, lighter and far more flattering in natural daylight.
MY FINAL TIP
Summer makeup should look effortless. Focus on lightweight textures, strategic layering and multi-tasking products, and you'll find your makeup lasts longer while still looking like skin. The best summer beauty looks aren't about covering up, they're about enhancing what's already there.
