RUBY REVEALS | ALL-WEATHER FESTIVAL FAVES
With festival season upon us, and Glastonbury less than two weeks away, it's time to start planning those outfits and the festival-friendly beauty to go with them. With this summer seemingly wetter and colder than usual, it's important to weather-proof your look to help your make up last all day (and night), come rain or shine!
My top-tips for weather-proof beauty:
Well-prepped skin
Before starting with your makeup, ensure to cleanse and moisturise for a smooth base. Well-prepped skin allows you to enhance your natural look with just a few products, rather than adding thick, mask-like layers of product that are likely to move around or 'melt' away after a couple of hours dancing in the crowd, or walking from stage to stage!
Primer
Even if primer isn't usually a go-to in your skin-prep routine, it's definitely worth adding when you need a little extra longevity. Apply after skincare, and before your base. Primer acts as a grip, keeping your makeup in place a lot longer and also acts as a barrier, stopping the natural oils from your skin altering your makeup. Leaving you free to dance to your hearts content! Milk and Nars Smooth & Protect Primer SPF 50 are personal favourites.
Light-weight base
Rather than a thick, all-over base, I always suggest using a concealer to camouflage any blemishes and even out your skin tone instead. I use the Fine Liner and Tapered Brush Heads from my Magnetic Brush Sets to apply, before blending & tapping in with my finger. The less product used in the first place, the less chance of it sliding across your skin throughout the day!
Long-lasting Eyeshadow
An eyeshadow primer is great for making eyeshadow pop, and ensuring longevity throughout the day. You can also try applying eyeshadow over an eye pencil, pressing it in place with either a brush or your fingers. Festivals are a fantastic opportunity to embrace your creativity and express yourself, so if you are opting for glitter, look out for glitter fixatives. Ben Nye does a great one that helps keep the glitter set it in place all day.
No-budge Mascara
If you haven't tried tubing mascara before now is the time. The lightweight formulation creates tiny "tubes" around each lash rather than painting them with pigment. These tubes wrap around your lashes, providing length and definition without clumping or smudging. If your luck is down, and it's forecast to rain, Lancome Idole Waterproof Mascara is a great waterproof option.
Set & Spray
Stop your makeup from slipping away with setting powders and sprays. Translucent powder absorbs excess oils and moisture, preventing makeup from sliding off or appearing shiny. Gently sweep it across areas of the face prone to makeup shifting. A light veil of product will ensure your look lasts as long as you do!
End with a setting spray, and keep a Magnetic Brush Set in your bag for touch ups throughout the day/night. They are great for fixing smudged makeup, blending out edges and softening creases. You can also use the small brushes to re-apply additional powder to any areas that become shiny, but remember less is more to avoid looking cakey.
Stay Hydrated
It's important to hydrate both yourself and your skin when at a festival. Drink lot's of water, and if space in your bag, keep a hydrating facial mist with you to refresh your skin throughout the day.
SPF
You might be looking at the weather predictions for this summer, thinking you can create some space in your bag by ditching the SPF... wrong! Whatever the weather, it's important to keep your skin protected from UV rays, especially at a festival as this often involves prolonged hours outdoors. Opt for a water-resistant formula to ensure it stays put even if you sweat!
DON'T FORGET TO CLEANSE
With SPF and festival adornments, including more shimmer than usual, you may find a wipe just doesn't cut it. With limited access to water, opt for a microfibre cloth with your cleanser, this will help remove even the most stubborn makeup with very little rubbing and scrubbing.
Let your hair down and have fun.
