RUBY REVEALS | ANATOMY OF THE MAKEUP BRUSH

Whether you are a makeup artist, a beauty lover or a beauty novice, there are lots of things to think about before buying brushes.
ANATOMY OF THE BRUSH
HEAD
The head is made up of bristles, and is the section that applies the product to the face. They can come in various shapes, and be made of various different hair types.
FERRULE
This is the metal part of the brush that connects the bristles to the handle. It keeps the bristles tightly packed together and securely attached to the handle.
HANDLE
The handle is the section you hold, and can come in various lengths. As a professional, it's great to have a long handled brush so that you are not almost sat in your model's lap, but for everyday use shorter is easier to control.
HAIR TYPES

There are two main categories: natural and synthetic. Each having its own unique properties and uses, suited to different kinds of application.

NATURAL
Natural brushes are made from animal hair (such as sable, squirrel or goat), giving them a more natural texture and feel. This does, however, mean they are often more expensive and not vegan-friendly. They can be known for holding product more efficiently, and are best used for powder application, such as blushers, bronzers and eyeshadows.
SYNTHETIC
Synthetic brushes are made from man-made fibres (such as polyester, nylon or taklon), making them more affordable than natural brushes, but often not as soft. Faux-hair brushes are better for applying cream and liquid products, as the fibres are less porous, also making them easier to clean and maintain.
BRUSH SHAPES
It can feel overwhelming seeing all the different types of brushes out there, but a great makeup look can all be achieved with just a few...
  • An angled brush can be used to fill in brows, line the eyes or lips, or create a sharp graphic line.
  • A small smudging brush can be used to blend out eyeliner, apply lip colour or soften smoky eyes.
  • A pointed blending brush can be used to apply eyeshadow, blur lip colour or apply and blend concealer.
  • A fine liner for extra precise work, graphic lines or strategic product placement.
  • A square brush for applying colour, lining lips, and applying shadow along the lash-line.
  • A spoolie for brushing up brows and keeping lashes clump free.
RUBY HAMMER FACE BRUSH
Our Face Brush is gently tapered to give you ultimate control with application, flexing to the curves of the face for seamless results. The densely packed bristles allow you to precisely place product, and buff and blend for a flawless finish. It's made with soft synthetic fibres, compatible with liquid, cream and powder formulas.

MAGNETIC BRUSH SETS

I have a huge variety of brushes in my kit, from fine liners to angled to huge body brushes, but as mentioned before, for every day I tend to stick to only a few styles. When designing my brush set I looked at what brushes I use most, and then looked at which were the most versatile. Between the six detachable brush heads, you can refine, define and blend the three key areas of the face – Brows, Eyes and Lips.
