THE ART OF MASCARA

THE ART OF MASCARA

The use of mascara can instantly transform your look, making your eyes appear more open and awake. Achieving perfect mascara application requires more than just a quick swipe. it on haphazardly. The trick is knowing where to apply it, how to layer it, and which mascara is right for you.

Prep

I always start by curling my lashes with an eyelash curler. This helps lift the lashes and open the eyes, for the most impactful look. Hold the curler at the base of the lashes for a few seconds for best results.

Finding the right wand

  • For volume look for larger brushes, these work best on longer lashes
  • Tapered brushes are great for loading up the outer lashes
  • Spiral brushes help curl your lashes by lifting as you roll the brush through the lashes
  • Curved brushes are great for creating a fan effect
  • Thin brushes (micro) are best for definition.. they're also my personal favourite
  • Short moulded brushes are great for lengthening and defining
  • Ball or Micro brushes are great for those hard to reach lashes

Finding the right formulation

  • Lengthening - ideal for those with shorter lashes
  • Volumising - ideal for those with sparce, thin lashes
  • Waterproof - long-lasting, great for those that are on-the-go, prone to watery eyes, or on holiday
  • Curling - great for those with naturally straight lashes, as keeps them lifted for longer
  • Tubing - wraps around each individual lash creating a lengthening effect, long-lasting and easy to remove with warm water

Application

Mascara is one of the last products I apply, so i always start with application on the topside of my lashes. It’s likely that some powder or eyeshadow is accidentally deposited on top of your lashes, so this helps cover that and ensure your lashes are coated from all angles. I’ll then move on to the underneath of my lashes, start from the root and working outwards. When applying to the lower lashes, be careful not to be too heavy-handed to avoid clumping/smudging. You want to add definition, but the lower lashes should be more subtle than the upper.

Layering

If you’re going for a natural day-to-day look, one coat may be enough, but if you’re prepping for a night out, you can always add a couple of layers for a more dramatic look. To really open up the eyes, layer up on the outer corners creating a feline effect.
