Ruby Reveals | The Secret to Self-Confidence
This week marked World Mental Health Day, and it got me thinking about the crossover between beauty, wellness, and mental health. When you feel good about how you look, your self-confidence naturally shines through. But self-confidence is about much more than the physical — it’s about embracing who you truly are, inside and out.
Feeling confident in your own skin isn’t about achieving a flawless appearance, or using makeup as a tool to transform yourself in to somebody else. It’s about feeling comfortable within yourself, celebrating the features you love, and learning to accept the ones you may not be as fond of. Confidence doesn't come from looking perfect but from knowing your worth and feeling good about who you are. Whether it’s through a smile, the way you carry yourself, or how you treat others, beauty shines in many forms. What may seem like a flaw to one person might be seen as a unique and beautiful feature to someone else. Everyone sees beauty differently, that’s what makes it special.
My Journey
As a young girl, I’d always be outside climbing trees, riding bikes and running wild. I grew up with two brothers, so was quite the tomboy. Skinny with wild, dark hair, and always covered in dust from playing outside - my nickname was Mowgli! How amazing that now, the little girl known as Mowgli, would become someone that people turn to for beauty advice. It goes to show the things about your appearance that seemed so negative at one point in your life, will become the things people (and yourself) celebrate about you.
Self-Care and Confidence
Self-care is a key party of building self-confidence. Take the time to look after yourself, and make time for both your mental and physical health. Whether it’s following a skincare routine, exercising, meditating, going for a walk, meeting up with loved ones, or simply taking time to rest… these small things we do for ourselves can make a huge difference in how we feel. Self-confidence starts with being kind to ourselves. That same kindness and compassion we give to others, we must give to ourselves.
Embrace the skin you’re in
We’re often guilty of placing huge importance on how we look, feeling pressure to look our best at all times. However, physical appearance is only a small part of self-confidence. True confidence comes from accepting and loving ourselves for who we are - flaws and all. Take the time to look into a mirror and really see your features - there is always something that you will like about yourself… play it up. The first step of embracing ourselves is to realise that we are all unique and special in our own ways - when you start to accept this, confidence will come.
Building self-confidence takes time and patience, it doesn’t happen overnight. We could all benefit from taking a step back, and making time for self-care and self-kindness. After all, true beauty is found in being authentically yourself, unapologetically and confidently.
